    Energy: Physical Education/Athletics

field hockey, 1940“The difference between the new and old attitudes towards education,” said President Constance Warren in 1940, “seems to me somewhat comparable to that between an enthusiastic golfer and the caddy who trudges along behind him.” Never content to caddy (in the classroom or out), SLC students have also put energy and spirit into being the golfer for real—or the skier, the ball player, the swimmer, the fencer. They’ve been part of a team, competed against other colleges and for athletic recognition, earned coveted P.E. credit, played for exercise and their own pleasure, hurled Frisbees on Westlands lawn and (more than once) powered a softball through Marshall Field’s windows, and they’ve done it all with commitment and panache—and, since 1998, they’ve done it in style at the Campbell Sports Center.
