Master of Fine Arts in Dance
About the Dance Program
Students in the MFA in Dance program are exposed to vital aspects of the art as performers, creators, and observers and are encouraged to study broadly, widen their definitions of dance and performance, and engage in explorations of form and function.
Program highlights:
- Combines seminars in reading, writing, and research; choreographic inquiry; and a daily physical practice chosen from various genres
- All students study experiential anatomy, dance history, lighting design and stagecraft, and music for dancers
- Students show original work each semester in the winter and spring concerts and present final projects in the MFA concert in their last semester
- Frequent guest artists and lecturers visit campus
- Proximity to New York City's dance scene

Our Faculty
Dancer and choreographer Sara Rudner has been a member of the faculty since 1999. Her recent choreographic projects include “Dancing-on-View,” one of a series of dance marathons, and “Heartbeat,” a fusion of technology and dance. Awards include a Bessie, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial fellowship, and support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Alastair Macaulay of The New York Times reviews City Center's Fall for Dance Program, which features a performance of "Fortune," choreographed by Pam Tanowitz MFA '98. Macaulay write, "It’s always a pleasure to see Ms. Tanowitz’s spruce use of footwork and legwork; but her use of the torso is also striking."
