Author of A Chance Meeting (Random House, 2004), a nonfiction book tracing a chain of 30 American writers and artists who knew or influenced or met one another over the period from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement; winner of the 2003 PEN/Jerard Fund Award. Essays in The New Yorker, The Threepenny Review, McSweeney’s, DoubleTake, Parnassus, and Modern Painters and in 2003 Best American Essays and 2003 Pushcart Prize anthologies.
